Sensations and Responses from Acupuncture Treatments -By Hong Jin, L.Ac.
During the acupuncture treatments, you might feel some sensations like tingling, heaviness, pressure, electric shock or traveling along the channels. Traveling sensation is the most effective response to the treatment. Once you feel it, acupuncture has already worked to force the blood, energy together with bioelectricity to move in the channels.
After acupuncture treatments, please avoid cold (interior and exterior cold) such as cold drink, cold food and cold wind attack especially exposure to electric fans or air conditioners. Cold can make blood vessels contract and thus cause the stagnant blood and energy flow to obstruct the channels.
Some medications and chemicals can block the channels too. However, when patients have to take the medication according to their Primary Care PhysicianÕs instruction, they can not stop the medication. Please be aware that acupuncture is a natural treatment. Its function can not be stronger than chemicals. Therefore, if the acupuncture treatment does not work as fast as expected due to this reason, please allow longer time and have more visits.
After acupuncture treatments, maybe you could feel whole bodyÕs
tiredness or sore, heavy, weak and achy on the areas where the
needle-insertions are, especially when you have chronic conditions and long
time pain. This is a normal reaction to the treatment. It is due to the
improvement of the blood circulation. Before the acupuncture treatment, the
poor blood flow in that area has formed a blockage in the channel. While the
stronger blood flow is being generated by the acupuncture stimulation, the
blood circulation in the treated area is still not sufficient to form a forceful
flow to remove the blockage completely. However, if you have the above
experience, you know that acupuncture has started to work. At this time you
simply need to continue the treatment and have it more frequently if possible. Heat (using
heating pads, taking hot showers, wearing more clothes, changing short sleeves /
shorts / bare feet habits and also having warm or hot food and water) can
relieve the tiredness and other discomfort sooner.
After acupuncture treatments, no exercises or sports are recommended unless you are instructed to do so by the acupuncturist. Otherwise, most movements not following the channelsÕ energy flow directions could block the channels thus making the acupuncture treatments less effective.
